Step-by-step guide to installing a custom ROM on your Samsung Galaxy

Installing a custom ROM can give an older Samsung Galaxy a newer Android experience, fewer preinstalled apps, and more control over system features. It can also improve battery behavior or performance when the official software no longer receives updates. The process, however, changes the phone at a deep system level and requires careful preparation.

A custom ROM is a modified Android operating system created by an independent developer or community. Popular projects may include LineageOS, crDroid, or Pixel-inspired builds, but compatibility depends on the exact Galaxy model, regional variant, processor, and Android version. A ROM made for the wrong device can leave the phone unable to boot.

This guide explains the general process for Samsung phones. Menus and files differ between models, so use the instructions published by the ROM maintainer as the final authority. Keep the original firmware available before changing anything.

Check compatibility before downloading files

Start by identifying the precise model number in Settings > About phone. A name such as Galaxy S21 is not specific enough because Samsung often sells several variants with different chipsets and modem hardware. Record the complete model code, current Android version, and security patch level.

Confirm that the ROM supports your model, bootloader revision, Android base, and required recovery image.
